My
Models:-
Over 9 years ago, my curiosity for model aircraft and aviation in general,
plus the fact that I was given an old Hustler trainer, got the better of me.
Armed with the Hustler, a new Futaba Attack 4 and an OS40
FSR motor, I headed down to the local model aircraft club. The L.D.M.F.A.
(Lilydale and Districts Model Flying Association in the outer eastern suburbs of
Melbourne, Australia)
After 3 months of valuable flying instruction by one of
the dedicated Club members, I received my much longed for wings. After this, the rest is
history. Below you can view the aircraft I've been flying over the years.
Hustler - Aeroflite
This is the model that started it all for me. Having harboured
an ambition to fly remote control aircraft for many years, the combination of my father
buying an OS40 for himself to start flying and a work collegue giving me this Hustler, I
got my start in this hobby.
Originally this model was built in the 70's as a 3 channel. (I built up
the 4 channel wing that Aeroflite had put out to convert this model. I found this model to
be a very stable trainer as well as a fun aircraft to keep flying as it is fairly
aerobatic compared to most trainers. This aircraft, in excess of 15 years old, still gets
around the skies at my local airfield with a tuned pipe.

Blue Angel 40 - M.K. (before & after)

This was my first venture into flying a low
wing aircraft after learning on the Hustler. As you can see it was too big a step!
Unfortunately, while on it's maiden flight and before I had gotten any real feel for this
model the motor failed.
I had let the model get too far away from me and was not able to glide
back to the runway, in fact I landed it on the other side of the Yarra River. After
swimming across, I searched for 3 hours without any sight of it. I later paid a fellow
member the cost to hire a full size Cessna and look for it from above, as the grass in the
paddock was too tall. He did find it and was able to give me some bearings from the dam on
the farm property.
You might think I'm pulling your leg but, most of the damage caused to the
model was from the cows in the paddock, that once they filled their curiosity for my
planein their field, went back to grazing and trampled the wings!
Next time I lose a model in a paddock, I'll know to start where the cows
are!

Hurricane 40L - Cosmo
This is a great aircraft for that first transition from High
Wing trainer to Low Wing sports model.

Toot - Brian Evans design
This is a 15 size 2 channel chuck model designed by Brian
Evans, a member of our club. Some of the best fun I've had has been in flying this
particular model. I have found however, that it is not suited to 2 things:-
1. Being launched with the receiver switched off. (This lead to total destruction.)
2. Having a pylon racer fly straight through the middle of it. (This also leads to total
destruction.)

Blue Angel 40 - M.K. (Rebuilt)
Believe it or not, this is the same Blue Angel that I talked
about further up the page. New wings, tail surfaces and a more modern colour scheme it
flies beautifully.

Shriek - Own Design

This Sports Pylon model was designed and built
after having a mid-air collision during a pylon race in which my China Clipper was
destroyed. It is powered with a standard OS45 FSR with a magic muffler which gives it
significantly better performance. The plane itself, is much faster than the China Clipper
with a tapered and thinner wing section, larger radii and wing fillets on an essentially
box section fuselage.

Viper - Bolly
This is a 1/2A pylon racer produced by Bolly Products with an
OS11 P engine swinging a Bolly carbon fibre propeller.

Extra 300 (40 size) - Hobbico ARF Kit
I've always steered away from ARF kits in the
past. In a moment of weakness and the frustration of not having a model that I was really
enjoying flying, I lashed out and purchased this model.

In general, the Hobbico kit was very easy to
build and with the exception of some of the trim finishing, was of a very good quality.
Some of the trim wasn't stuck down properly or the trim fell short of what it was
covering. This was remedied by adding some extra trim here and there as well as ironing
down a few areas.

I was very pleased with the finished result.
Unfortunately On the maiden flight, I suffer from some sort of radio interference and the
model was destroyed. I was heart broken as I was looking forward to some great flying with
this model. Back to the building board!!!!! |
