My Mid-air ...........................30th June 96
Incident #1 - 9th April 95

I was attending our club’s annual 40 lap pylon event. This is an event that requires 4 people to fly their aircraft around a pylon course (a triangular course with 2 long sides and one short.) 40 times, then land with the motors still running.

A handicap is worked out by timing each plane flying 3 laps at random, then that handicap is used along with the final time to give each competitor a score. By using the handicap method, a slow but very consistent flight can win the day.

On this day I was flying my China Clipper (Quickie 500 type) with an extra fuel tank attached to give me the range to complete the 40 laps. Unfortunately, there was quite a strong cross wind on the course and because of the area available, we couldn’t rotate the course 90 degrees to fly into the wind on take off.

For one reason or another there were only 2 of us flying in the 2nd round. After about 10 laps, the 2 of us were fairly close as we rounded the No.1 pylon, the other competitor was all set up to overtake me on the inside of that turn. We rounded pylon 1 and straightened up but we were both still flying knife edge. Then there was a sudden gust of wind pushing my plane in onto the other plane. My plane flew right through the centre of the other, bringing us both down and reducing the planes to match sticks.
